Information
Perennial monoecious herb with depressed, ovoid underground tuber up to c. 5 cm in diam., a short annual stem sometimes present, but not reaching above ground level. Leaves: stipules triangular, 1.5–3 mm long, ± persistent; petiole up to 8.5 cm long, puberulous; blade ovate to elliptic, 4–18.5 x 2.5–10.5 cm, truncate or subcordate at the base, acute or acuminate at the apex, with crenulate or finely toothed margins, slightly scaberulous above, with softer hairs on the veins below. Receptacles on 2.5–13 cm long peduncles, circular in outline, up to 7 mm in diam. and 1.5 mm thick, appendages 8–10, up to 1.5 cm long. Male flowers numerous, perianth lobes 2, stamens 2. Female flowers fewer, stigma unbranched. Fruit ovoid to subglobular, 1–1.5 mm in diam., with a white, slightly verrucose endocarp.
