Information
Shrub c. 2 m. tall; branches softly pilose with simple or little-branched hairs, soon glabrescent. Leaf-lamina up to 24 cm. in diam., very broadly ovate to orbicular, usually shallowly 3-lobed with acuminate lobes, deeply cordate and 7-nerved at the base, pilose above, more densely so or subtomentose and paler below, nerves and veins prominent below; petiole up to 15 cm. long, pubescent or glabrescent; stipules up to 1·5 × 0·7 cm., submembranous, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, densely pilose. Flowers vermilion, in axillary subumbellate 3–9-flowered cymes; peduncle up to 9 cm. long, softly pilose; pedicels up to 4 cm. long, densely pilose; bracts c. 1·6 × 0·7 cm., lanceolate-acuminate, pilose. Calyx-lobes up to 2·5 × 0·7 cm., narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, densely pubescent outside. Petals up to 3·5 × 2·5 cm., obliquely rhomboid-obovate. Stamens connate below for 5 mm.; staminodes c. 1 cm. long, linear, minutely papillose. Ovary oblong-ovoid, tomentose; loculi glabrous within; ovules 5–6 per loculus, in a single row; style c. 2 cm. long, glabrous except for a few mm. at the base; stigmas recurved, c. 2 mm. long. Ripe capsule not so far seen.
Habitat
Woodlands on mountain-sides.
Range
Endemic in Mozambique.
Distribution
Mozambique Z Gúruè Mts., fl. 26.vi.1943, Torre 5618 (K; LISC; SRGH).
Notes
This is certainly our most handsome Dombeya and well worth cultivation.
