Information
Stems pubescent or glabrous. Leaflets ovate-triangular, 2.5–15 x 1.5–14 cm, acuminate. Rhachis of inflorescence 4–20 cm long; peduncle 2–40 cm long; bracteoles elliptic or round, 4–6(–8) mm long. Calyx glabrous or pubescent; tube 3–4 mm long; lobes 2–4 mm long. Standard crimson, purple or white, 1.2–1.5 cm long. Pods oblong-falcate to linear-oblong, 3.5–14 x 1.2–4 cm, 2–5-seeded, pubescent or glabrescent.
Range
N2; S1, 3 throughout tropical Africa and south to E Cape Province.
Altitude range
200–1800 m.
Notes
Hyacinth bean, bonavist bean (Eng.). The Somali plants probably belong to subsp. uncinatus Verdc. with pods c. 4.5 x 1.5 cm. Subsp. purpureus, with larger pods, otherwise is the most widely cultivated taxon.
