Shrub or tree, up to 7.5 m tall, with spreading or rounded crown; bark green to dark grey, fissured into rectangular patches. Leaves olive-green; petiole 3.5–4 mm long; blade elliptic to ovate, obovate or rarely round, 1.5–10 x 7–9 cm, cuneate at the base, obtuse to acute and usually mucronulate at the apex; venation often obscure but sometimes prominent and reticulate. Flowers white or cream, 3.5–5 mm long, in axillary and terminal panicles. Calyx often 2-lipped, c. (2.2–)2.8–3 mm long. Petals (3.5–)4.5–5 mm long. Filaments (1.2–)2–2.5 mm long; anthers 1.6–2 mm long. Ovule solitary. Fruit oblong-ellipsoid to subglobose, (1.8–)1.9–2.6 x 1–1.3 cm. Seed ovoid, flattened, 1.2–2 x 0.75–1.5 cm.

N1–3; C1, 2; S1–3 Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, N Uganda, Kenya, extending to S Arabia and India.

Notes
Garas (Som.). The fruits are edible. The branches are often lopped for fodder. The wood is used for stool and bed frames, water containers, tool handles and Koran teaching boards.
