plant 1–2 1/2 ft. high; stem stout, leafy; leaves lanceolate to elongate-linear, acute, usually somewhat spreading, 3–8 in. long, gradually passing upwards into acuminate sheaths; scapes 1–2 1/2 ft. high, with numerous acuminate sheaths above; spikes 1–2-flowered, rarely 3–5-flowered; bracts lanceolate, acuminate, 1 1/4–2 in. long; pedicels 1–1 3/4 in. long; flowers very large, brilliant scarlet, with darker veins on the dorsal sepal, and some yellow or orange on the petals; dorsal sepal galeate, broadly ovate; acute or apiculate, 1 1/2–2 1/4 in. long; spur narrowly conical, about 1/2 in. long; lateral sepals broadly ovate, abruptly acuminate, 1 1/2–2 1/4 in. long; petals obovate or obovate-oblong, with incurved subobtuse apex, 3/4–1 in. long; lip linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 1/2– 3/4 in. long, recurved at the apex; column 3/4–1 in long; anther reclinate, narrow and acute; rostellum erect, somewhat elongate, with short divaricate side lobes; stigma pulvinate; capsule oblong, 1 1/2–2 in. long. null
