Small or medium-sizedforesttree 15-60 ft. high; bark black, thin, smooth, breaking like flint when struck; slash black outside, pale pink turning ochrous-yellow inside; sapwood white, rapidly becoming bright yellow; flowers fragrant; corolla white; fruits borne in fascicles on the branches and trunk; fruiting calyx red.
