Information
Plants often in clumps, 20–150 cm. high. Rhizome thick, moniliform, horizontal, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots ± spongy, without tubers. Leaves subdistichous (distichous in young plants), sheathing at the base, linear to linear-lanceolate, firm, 12–75 cm. long, 0.5–2.5(–4) cm. wide, the margins scabrid to shortly ciliate; cataphylls and outer leaf-bases often reddish brown streaked or spotted reddish. Peduncle terete, glabrous, 20–95 cm. long, with bract-like leaves along its entire length. Inflorescence a narrow subspicate raceme, rarely with a few branches at the base, often dense, exserted above the leaves, 10–30 cm. long; floral bracts leafy, occasionally red spotted; rhachis angled, winged; floral bracts oblanceolate, aristate, purplish and ciliate on the margins, lower ones 8–20 mm. long. Pedicels articulated at the apex, glabrous, 1–5(–8) mm. long, solitary at the nodes. Perianth white, sometimes with greenish apices, ± bell-shaped, constricted above the ovary; tepals connate, cucullate, 6–10 mm. long, 1.5–3 mm. wide, 1-veined, papillate on the inside just above the ovary. Stamens exserted at anthesis; filaments filiform to slightly fusiform, longer than the tepals; anthers 1.5–2.5 mm., clasping the style at anthesis. Style straight to slightly declinate, slightly longer than the stamens. Capsule obovoid, triquetrous, emarginate, 4–8 mm. long, 3.5–5 mm. wide. Seeds disc-shaped, 2–3 mm. in diameter. Fig. 4/3–7.

Notes
The species varies considerably in size, cataphyll/leaf-base coloration, and indumentum of leaf-margins. This variation was observed both at inter-population and intra-population levels. High altitude forms may be dwarfed with intense blackish coloration (e.g. Kerfoot 1633 fromT7, Mbeya peak). Chromosome number: 2n=16 based on countings from Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, cf. Nordal et al. in Mitt. Inst. Allg. Bot. Hamburg 23 (1990).
