DACTYLOCTENIUM glaucophyllum Chiov. var. somalicum [family POACEAE], in Ann. Bot. 13: 371 (1915);. types: S2, Scassellati 142, Paoli 379, 1334 (all FT syn.).
DACTYLOCTENIUM bogdanii S.M. Phillips [family POACEAE], (1974).
Information
Stoloniferous mat-forming perennial up to 110 cm high; leaves glaucous, flat, tough and glabrous (except for the papillose-hispid margins) or softer and pilose. Inflorescence comprising (1–)2–4(–6) linear to narrowly oblong, straight or slightly falcate racemes 2–7 cm long, these ascending or diverging. Spikelets elliptic to ovate, 3–6.7 mm long; glumes subequal, 1.3–2.2 mm long, the upper with an awn 2/3–1¼ times the length of the body; lemmas lanceolate in profile, 2.8–4 mm long, subacute to cuspidate, often with a mucro up to 0.75 mm long; anthers 1.1–2.3 mm long. Grain transversely rugose.
Range
C2; S1–3 eastern Africa.
Altitude range
0–450 m.
Distribution
SOMALIA Kuchar 17150; Beckett 1804; Rose Innes 700; Hemming & Deshmukh 197.
Notes
In Kenya and Tanzania this species shows a marked tendency towards differentiation into two taxa. D. geminatum s. str. typically has 2 racemes and a subacute lemma with glabrous or scaberulous keel; the segregate taxon, called D. bogdanii, has up to 6 racemes and an acute or cuspidate lemma with the scabrid keel extended into a mucro up to 0.75 mm long. However, in Somalia the distinguishing features break down and the recognition of more than one taxon is untenable. Clearly Dactyloctenium is actively speciating in eastern Africa and further taxonomic complications will be encountered further south.
