Information
Trailing or climbing succulent herb up to 2 m long; stems glabrous. Tendrils present. Leaves 3–5-foliolate, glabrous, sessile or lower leaves with petiole up to 1 cm long; leaflets oblong, elliptic or ovate, 2–11(–15) x 1–5(–7) cm, cuneate to truncate at the base, acute to rounded at the apex, with coarsely toothed margins. Flowers in 5–10 cm long inflorescences; peduncle 2–6.5(–12) cm long, glabrous; pedicels 3–8 mm long elongating to 13 mm in fruit, glabrous or usually with short glandular hairs. Buds 2.5–4 mm long, glabrous. Petals yellowish-green. Fruits ellipsoid to subglobose, 7–12 x 6–10 mm, red, glabrous. Seed ellipsoid to obovoid, 5–8 x 3–6 mm, the dorsal and ventral ridges obscure to conspicuous, sides smooth to strongly ridged.

Notes
The author of C. ternatum is usually cited as (Forssk.) Descoings, but the alleged basionym, Saelanthus ternatus Forssk., is not validly published as the generic name Saelanthus was published without a diagnosis. Gilg (1905) cited three syntypes for Cissus somaliensis and Robecchi-Bricchetti 236 and Ruspoli & Riva 1117 agree with C. ternatum . However, the third syntype, Robecchi-Bricchetti 509, also present in FT, seems to be a subglabrous form of the variable Cyphostemma digitatum (see under this species).
