Information
glabrous; stolons clothed by dark brown, elliptic scales, hardening into woody rhizomes 1/8– 1/6 in. in diam.; stems 8–20 in. long, rather slender but tough, trigonous at the top; leaves numerous, all near the base of the stem, as long as the stem or only 1/2 that length, 1/3– 3/4 in. broad, grass-like, with 2 lateral, white, more or less prominent nerves; tip lanceolate, not caudate; umbel compound; rays often 8–24, slender, 1–4 in. long, several usually nearly equal; bracts about 8, overtopping the umbel, several of the lower nearly equal, similar to the leaves; spikelets often all solitary, pedicelled, but in some examples many 2–4-digitate occur, 1/3 by 1/16– 1/12 in., compressed, pale-brown, 8–24-flowered; glumes ovate, acute or obtuse, not keeled, many-nerved; margins scabrous; stamens 3; anthers linear, not crested; nut 3/4 the length of the glume, trigonous, ellipsoid, brown; style scarcely 1/3 the length of the nut; branches 3, linear, rather short. null
