Information
glabrous; stems 4–20 in. long; rather slender, thickened at the base, clustered on a very short woody rhizome, clothed by black hard scales; leaves 1/2 as long as the stem, 1/12 in. broad, usually narrower than in C. compactus; bracts 3, lowest up to 2–3 in. long, similar to the leaves; spikelets 3–7 in 1 head, 3/4 by 1/4 in., compressed but much thicker than in C. compactus, shining straw-coloured, 10–20-flowered; glumes boat-shaped, ovate, obtuse, strongly 11–15-nerved, less closely packed but more inflated than in C. compactus; margins not incurved; nut large, 1/3– 2/5 the length of the glume, ellipsoid, acute at the top, strongly triquetrous with concave faces, dull black. null

Notes
This species is tolerably uniform in South Africa, but in Tropical Africa it varies greatly in the width of the leaves and in the size of the spikelets. Some examples have needle-like stem and leaves, and one very small spikelet, others have leaves 1/5 in. wide, others have spikelets 1 by 3/8 in. The distribution will require emendation, if the species be subdivided.
