umbel once-compound or imperfectly twice-compound; spikes loose; spikelets spreading or deflexed; otherwise as M. riparius and M. Grantii. null
Range
Also in Madagascar.
Distribution
COAST REGION Albany Div.; near the Kowie River, MacOwan, 669 partly! Komgha Div.; near Komgha, Flanagan, 921!EASTERN REGION Natal; near Sydenham, 300 ft., Wood, 4004!SOUTH AFRICA without locality, Drège, 4411! Ecklon and Zeyher, 131! Thunberg.
Notes
The loose spreading spikelets look very unlike the heads of M. riparius with crowded suberect spikelets; but here, again, I can find no difference in glumes, rhachilla, nut, style, or any trustworthy character. C. Owani, Boeck. in Flora, 1878, 29, as to MacOwan, n. 496b. in herb. Kew, I sort it with M. umbilensis.
