Slender annual with a minute root system; stems 3–14 cm long and 0.2–0.5 mm thick, triangular, glabrous. Leaf-blades flat or inrolled, slightly scabrid near the apex, 1–8 cm long and 0.2–0.8 mm wide; sheaths reddish brown to purple. Inflorescence a single spikelet-cluster of 4–20 (rarely 1–3) spikelets, or of 1 sessile and 1–3 stalked spikelet-clusters; major involucral bracts 2–8 cm long, leafy to filiform; major inflorescence-branches (when present) 0.5–2 cm long. Anthela 2.5–4 cm in diam. when consisting of several spikelet-clusters; each spikelet-cluster 1–2 cm across. Spikelets 4–10 x 1.7–2 mm, linear, squarrose, reddish brown, 8–25-flowered. Glumes 1.6–2 mm long including the 0.5–0.6 mm long excurrent recurved midrib, strongly 3-nerved, truncate, reddish brown with green midrib. Stamens 1–3. Style 3-branched. Nutlet 0.6–0.8 x 0.3–0.4 mm, obovate, strongly triangular, reddish brown with dark grey angles, densely papillose.
