Perennial with a long creeping branched stolon to 1 m or more long with shorter lateral sterile shoots from the nodes (these are frequently crowded at the tip of the stolon), and fertile terminal shoots. Leaves 0.5–8 cm long and 0.5–1.5 mm wide, subterete with scabrid margin and frequently with a prominent transverse impression below the apex; leaf-sheaths grey, translucent, but with darker reddish brown nerves, the old sheaths darker and splitting up into fibres. Inflorescence a solitary head or spikelet-cluster on a 1–8 cm long stem, consisting of 2–10 rather flattened reddish brown spikelets 4–10 x 3–4 mm. Glumes 3–4 mm long, reddish brown with a paler margin. Style 3-branched.
