Information
Glabrous, annual. Stems 2–10 in. long, tufted, slender. Leaves usually as long as the stem, setaceous. Umbel simple (rarely compound or reduced to a head); bracts 3–6, much overtopping the umbel, setaceous. Spikelets digitate, often 3–10 together, 1/2 by 1/8– 1/6 in., compressed, 8–28-flowered, from pale ferruginous to brown. Glumes ovate, strongly 3-nerved, the green keel excurrent in a recurved prominent bristle. Nut as long as 1/2 the glume (exclusive of the mucro), oblong-obovoid.

Common in all tropical and warm temperate lands.

Notes
C. aristatus, Rottb., having similar recurved points to the glumes, has been much confused with the present species, but differs inter alia by having the spikelets spicate, not digitate.
