Information
Perennial with a basal bulb covered by brown to blackish scales and with very slender stolons ending in new 3–7 mm thick bulbs from which the stems emerge; stems 8–50 cm long, triangular. Leaves many, 5–25 cm long and 2–6 mm wide. Inflorescence a lax anthela 3–12 cm long and 5–12 cm wide, consisting of 4–6 leafy bracts, 1 sessile spike and 3–6 stalked spikes or reduced to 1 single spike. Spikes 1.5–4 x 1.5–4 cm, consisting of 5–20 spreading spikelets. Spikelets 5–25 x 1.5–3 mm, linear-lanceolate, dark reddish brown to yellowish green, 5–10-flowered. Glumes 3–4 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, dark reddish brown to almost blackish, with a paler slightly excurrent green midrib (even in the uppermost glumes the mucro is c. 0.2 mm long only) and prominent lateral nerves. Style 3-branched. Nutlet c. 0.8 x 0.5 mm, triangular, papillose.
Range
N1, 2; C2; S1–3 widespread in Africa, also Arabia to India and Malaysia, and N Australia.
