Information
glabrous, annual; stems 1–12 in. long; leaves 2/3 as long as the stem, 1/16– 1/8 in. broad; spikes loosely umbelled, or stem with 1 spike, sometimes with only 3 spikelets; bracts 3, lowest 2–6 in. long, similar to the leaves; spikes of 3–12 closely spicate spikelets, ebracteate; spikelets commonly 1/2 by 1/12 in. (in form abyssinica 3/4 by 1/8 in.) compressed, parallel-sided, straw-coloured more or less red-tinged, 8–36-nutted; glumes close-placed, ovate, boat-shaped, inflated, obtuse; rhachilla persistent in fruit, glumes falling off regularly from its base; style-branches 2; nut obovoid, compressed, shining-black, hardly 1/2 as long as the glume, transversely white-muriculate by reason of the subpersistent ends of the small longitudinally-oblong superficial cells. null
Range
Extends from England and Denmark to Cabul and the Cape, and widely scattered in America. The large bright form abyssinica (admitted as a species by Boeckeler) extends from South Europe to South Africa.
