Information
Leaves mostly cauline, these with a broadly rounded ± cordate base 7–25 mm. wide, tapering thence to a filiform tip.

Notes
In typical specimens the cauline leaves of var. catangensis are strikingly different, but the two varieties are not very sharply segregated and a good many intermediates can be found. There is a partial geographical separation, var. amplectens being absent from northern and western Africa.This species can be confused with Andropogon schirensis which has a shorter blunt callus and sharply keeled lower glume.
