Information
Tufted perennial up to 150 cm high; leaves attenuate at the base. False panicle linear to narrowly oblong, 5–35 cm long; racemes 15–30 mm long, ciliate with hairs up to 2 mm long, the lowermost pedicel swollen, free from the adjacent internode which itself is sometimes swollen. Sessile spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4–7 mm long; lower glume chartaceous, glabrous or pubescent, nerveless or with 2–3 intercarinal nerves in the upper 1/3, shallowly to deeply concave between the keels, these rounded in the lower 1/2 and often separated by a gibbous swelling at the base; awn of upper lemma 10–20 mm long, geniculate and with a distinct column. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly lanceolate, 4.5–7 mm long.

N1–3; C1 tropical Africa eastwards through Arabia to Iraq and India.

200–1590 m.
