Notes
In his treatment of the genus, Hansen distinguished two subspecies, the typical one and subsp. camporum. His criteria for this separation, I feel are far too weak and indecisive. He has investigated all aspects of the species from calyx, corolla, stamen and shape and size of pistil, habit and geographical distribution and has used his findings to present apparently good and valid reasons for this separation. However, from all the material from the Flora Zambesiaca area I have studied, I have found far too many examples of intermediates between the subspecies, even as identified by Hansen, to feel that the distinction is clear cut. Here, for the convenience of Flora Zambesiaca I have decided not to recognise Hansen’s two subspecies.
