Information
Stem 1–1 1/2 ft. high, 1/2 in. thick. Leaves ascending, glabrous; petiole 1 1/2–3 1/2 in. long, broadly sheathing up to 2–7 lin. from the top; apex of sheath not auricled; blade 4 1/2–9 1/2 in. long, 2 3/4–5 in. broad, unequal-sided, elliptic or elliptic-oblong, subacute, obtuse or somewhat rounded at the base, bright green with dark green veins above, not shining, light green beneath, with scattered dark-coloured glands that become very indistinct in the dried state; midrib and veins impressed above, prominent beneath, conspicuously reticulate. Peduncle solitary, terminal, 1–1 1/4 in. long, 1/8 in. thick, glabrous. Spathe 1 1/3–1 3/4 in. long, 3/4–1 in. broad, convolute at the base only, upper part expanded, elliptic, obtuse, apiculate, white within, greenish outside in the basal part, glabrous. Spadix shorter than the spathe, 2 1/2 lin. thick, cylindric, obtuse, stipitate; stipes 2–3 lin. long; female part 4–5 lin. long; male part about 1/2 in. long. Ovaries 12–15, depressed, angular from mutual pressure, dull scarlet, 2-celled; stigma sessile, whitish. Anthers crowded, milk-white. Berries 4–5-angled, dull vermilion-red, not shining.
Distribution
Cameroons Upper Guinea Victoria Mountains, cultivated specimens, Mann! Mungo, in damp forests, Buchholz, 94,134 (ex Engler).
Notes
When held to the light the spaces between the primary lateral veins are seen to be traversed by one or more very long translucent laticiferous vessels, often visible to the naked eye on the underside of the dried leaves as long, dark, very slender lines, and very evident in the living state.
