Information
Shrub or shrubby herb, up to 1 m tall; young branches pubescent. Leaves seemingly in whorls of 4, pubescent; blade narrowly to broadly ovate or elliptic, 2.5–13 x 1–6 cm, subacute to obtuse at the apex; petiole 0.5–5 cm long. Spikes 4–12 cm long; peduncle 2–10 cm long; sterile bracts ending in short recurved spine, puberulous; fertile bracts obovate, 12–20 x 6–14 mm, abruptly ending in ± recurved 1–3 mm long spine, entire, pilose mainly in lower part, ciliate, with 3–5 strong longitudinal veins and raised reticulum. Corolla orange to bright red; tube 15–20 mm long; limb 15–20 mm long.
