Names
Crassula gemmifera [family CRASSULACEAE]
Information
Perennials with erect to decumbent stems up to 70 mm long, more or less branched and often producing adventitious roots where branches touch the ground. Leaves linear or linear-oblanceolate, 3-5 x c. 1 mm, usually obtuse, almost flat above and more or less convex below, spreading to recurved, glabrous, fleshy, pale green. Inflorescence with terminal flower in the axil of a leaf due to sympodial growth, with 4-merous flowers. Calyx: lobes broadly triangular, c. 0,5 mm long, obtuse. Corolla more or less cup-shaped, scarcely fused at base, white; lobes elliptic-oblong, c. 1,5 mm long, bluntly acute, more or less recurved. Stamens with red anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0,5-0,7 x 0,1-0,2 mm, slightly rounded, gradually constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, white tinged red above.
Habitat
This species had previously been included in C. vaillantii (above) but the papillate sculpturing of the seed membrane distinguishes it well (Wickens & Bay-water, pers. comm.). The brood buds mentioned by Friedrich (1979) have only been observed on a few specimens and it has not been established whether they occur generally in this species or whether they are only induced by extreme conditions.
Use
5. Crassula gemmifera Friedr. in Mitt, bot. StSamml., Munch. 15: 592, fig. 7 (1979). Type: Lesotho, Sehlabathebe Mountain National Park, Jacot Guillarmod 7/75 (M, holo.).
Range
Widespread in the Drakensberg of north-western Natal, eastern Orange Free State, Lesotho and northern parts of the eastern Cape Province; growing in moist places near standing water or in shaded rock crevices. Flowering period: November—February.
