Cotyledon campanulata [family CRASSULACEAE]
Common names
C. teretifolia Thunb., Prodr. 83 (1794); Fl. Cap. edn Schultes 397 (1823); DC, Prodr. 3: 397 (1828); Eckl. & Zeyh., Enum. 306 (1837); Harv. in F.C. 2: 373 (1862); Hook. f. in Curtis's bot. Mag. 32, t. 6235 (1876); Schonl. in Rec. Albany Mus. 3: 143 (1915); Marloth, Fl. S. Afr. 2: 15, t. 3c (1925); V. Poelln. in Reprium nov. Spec. Regni veg. 42: 38 (1937); Batten & Bokel-mann, Wild Flow. E. Cape Prov. 73, t. 62, 5 (1966); Jacobsen, Sukk. Lex. 136, t. 41, 1 (1970), non Lam. (1786). Type: Cape, sine loc. exact., Thunbergin Herb. Thunberg 11014 (UPS, holo.!).
Information
Shrublets with spreading, later decumbent, branches up to 0,2 m long, much branched from base. Leaves opposite, linear to lanceolate, (40-)50-80(-130) x 10 -25(-35) mm, acute and usually pointed, convex below and usually grooved above, densely covered with glandular hairs, yellowish green, with apical margin more or less brown and often undulate at least when young. Inflorescence a thyrse with 3-5 di-chasia each with 3-8 flowers; peduncle 0,15-0,35(-0,45) m long, viscid. Calyx: lobes triangular-ovate, 3-5 mm long, acute, densely covered with glandular hairs. Corolla yellow rarely yellowish green; tube cylindrical, 5-8 mm long, viscid outside, glabrous inside except for a tuft of hairs where filaments are fused to tube; lobes linear-lanceolate, reflexed and straight. Anthers 2-2,5 mm long. Squamae transversely oblong, 0,7-1 x 1,6-2 mm, slightly emarginate, fleshy, pale yellow.
Habitat
The leaves vary from linear to oblanceolate and are usually densely covered with glandular hairs. Plants with broader leaves and sparser tomentum should be treated with caution as these characters often indicate hybrids with C. orbiculata (no. 6). If the corolla of such specimens is orange and the lobes are recurved to recoiled, instead of reflexed and straight as in C. cam-panulata, this underlines their hybrid nature. Hybrids are quite frequently observed in the field but only extreme cases can be identified in herbarium material.
Use
8. Cotyledon cam pa nu lata Marloth in Trans. S. Afr. phil. Soc. 18: 46, t. 5, fig. 6 (1907); R. A. Dyer in Flower. PI. Afr. 21, t. 808 (1941); Gledhill, E. Cape Veld Flow. 125, t. 28, 3 (1971). Type: Swanepoelspoort Mountains, Marloth 4379 (PRE, holo.!).
Range
Locally common in the eastern Cape Province from east of Willowmore to Graaff-Reinet and the Fish River valley. Usually growing in clumps in low karroid scrub vegetation on lower slopes and in depressions. Flowering period: October-December.
