Names
Cotyledon adscendens [family CRASSULACEAE]
Information
Shrubs or scramblers up to 2 m high, little branched. Leaves opposite, obovate to rarely oblanceolate, 20-45(-55) x (10-) 15-25 mm, cuneate, usually acute, dorsiventrally compressed and somewhat concave above, convex below, glabrous, often with flaking wax (silvery flakes on dried specimens), usually yellowish green with a deep red margin almost around the whole leaf. Inflorescence a thyrse with 1, 2 (3) dichasia, each with few flowers; peduncle slender, 0,15-0,25(-0,3) m long, glabrous. Calyx: lobes triangular, 3-A mm long, acute, glabrous to pubescent. Corolla usually orange-red; tube almost cylindrical, 12—15 mm long, glabrous on inside and outside; lobes lanceolate. Squamae transversely oblong, 0,8-1 x 1,7-2 mm, emarginate, very fleshy, pale yellow.
Habitat
At first glance this species might be considered to be a hybrid between C. velutina (no. 2) and C. woodii (no. 4), both of which occur in the area concerned. On closer investigation this seems most unlikely seeing that C. adscendens is found only in one small area east of Port Elizabeth while the putative parents occur together at many localities outside this area without any records of more 'putative hybrids'.
Use
5. Cotyledon adscendens R. A. Dyer in Flower. PI. Afr. 27, t.1080 (1949). Type: Cape, Swartkops, Erens in PRE 28367 (PRE, holo.!; BOL!).
Range
Restricted in its distribution but quite common in a small area on the coastal dunes east of Port Elizabeth in the eastern Cape Province; growing in scrub vegetation on sand or conglomerate near the sea. Flowering period: October—December.
