Information
Perennial herb 0.6–3 m high; stems slightly woody at base, little branched, pilose to thinly pubescent. Leaves variable, pinnatipartite to bipinnatisect or the uppermost and lowermost sometimes simple, 5–15 cm long, up to 10 cm wide, when lobed with ovate segments, when simple with serrate to lobed margins, the teeth mucronate to apiculate, apex acute to acuminate, tomentose or hispid-pubescent on both surfaces; petiole 10–40 mm long. Capitula terminal, solitary or in few-headed leafy cymes, erect; stalks of individual capitula 1–5(–21, fide EA) cm long; involucre 7–14 mm long; outer phyllaries 9–13, green, pubescent, inner phyllaries with scarious margins, pilose to pubescent; paleae 5.5–14 mm long, obtuse. Ray florets yellow or orange, neuter, 8–13, tube 3.5–4.5 mm long, pubescent, ray 20–40 mm long, 10–15 mm wide; disc florets yellow, 5–7 mm long. Achenes black or dark brown, 5.5–10 mm long, compressed, pilose; aristae absent in outer achenes, on inner 2, divergent, to 2.5 mm long, nude or with 1 or 2 antrorsely- or retrorsely-set barbs at apex or at base. USES.For staining wood (van Someren)CONSERVATION Least concern (LC) Leaf variation is considerable as to dissection and indumentum: 3-lobed leaves are very common, with the terminal segments the largest, but up to 11 lobes per leaf do occur in the species.
