Notes
Subsp. leutweinii (Schinz) Exell, with generally smaller leaf-blades densely to sparsely pubescent on both surfaces and often rufous tomentose on the nerves, may occur in T8 on the Mozambique border, but no specimens have been seen. Some specimens from the drier parts of coastal Kenya (K7) approach subsp. leutweinii, but in view of the gap in distribution, the subspecies otherwise occurring only in Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia south to Rhodesia and South West Africa, I prefer to regard these specimens as ecological variants of subsp. apiculatum.
