Information
Mat-forming perennial. Culms 5–20 cm. high, ascending from a creeping branched base and rooting at the nodes. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate, 0.6–2 cm. long, 1.5–4.5 mm. wide, flat. Panicles 1.2–6 cm. long, up to 2.5 cm. wide, the branches up to 2 cm. long, loosely to sparsely spiculate. Spikelets ovate-oblong to oblong, 2–2.5 mm. long, purplish or green; glumes broadly ovate to broadly elliptic, glabrous; lower lemma broadly ovate to ovate-elliptic, ± 2 mm. long, pubescent at the base; upper lemma elliptic to ovate-oblong, up to 2 mm. long, ± pubescent; anthers 2, 0.5–0.9 mm. long. C. africana belongs to a complex of interrelated species, which includes the Indian species C. simpliciuscula Benth. which has spiciform panicles, and the Indonesian species C. infirma Büse which has 3 stamens.
