Information
Perennial climber; rootstock projecting above the soil as a prolate hemiellipsoid; stems herbaceous, glabrous, at the base becoming thickened and woody with thin brownish papery bark. Leaves usually subsessile and ± amplexicaul; blade elliptic or elliptic-cordate in outline, glabrous, slightly apiculate, 30–90 mm. long, 38–72 mm. broad, shallowly to deeply pinnately or pinnato-palmately 5–7-lobed; lobes opposite, broadly rounded to finely dissected, 3–30 mm. broad; blade narrowed to 3–42 mm. between the lobes; petiole 2–5 mm. long, sometimes up to 30 mm. long in lower leaves. Male flowers on 17–25 mm. long pedicels; receptacle-tube cylindrical below, expanded and broadly campanulate above, 7–10 mm. long; lobes triangular-lanceolate, 2–3 mm. long; corolla-lobes 12–28 mm. long, 8–13 mm. broad, united in lower quarter. Female flowers on 9–10 mm. long stalks; ovary ellipsoid, obtuse at the ends, shortly and densely hairy, 15–19 mm. long, 4–4.5 mm. across; receptacle-tube cylindrical, ± 7 mm. long; lobes triangular-lanceolate, ± 2.5 mm. long; corolla-lobes ± 26 mm. long and 12 mm. broad, united below. Fruit on a ± 7 mm. long stalk, ellipsoid, attenuate at the ends, red, 80 mm. long and 40 mm. across. Seeds 6 × 5 × 2 mm.; testa verrucose with small rounded warts.
