Information
Liane climbing to 40 m. or more, or scandent shrub sometimes forming dense thickets. Young stems glabrous. Leaves thinly coriaceous, scarcely discolorous when dry, glabrous; petiole 5–8 mm. long; lamina 5·2–10·6 x 2·4–5 cm., oblong or slightly ovate-oblong, contracted at apex into a distinct, narrow, parallel-sided, round-tipped acumen up to 9 mm. long; upper surface mat, midrib raised, other nerves conspicuous; lower surface mat, midrib level or slightly raised, lateral nerves and tertiary reticulation slightly in relief. Venation with lateral nerves ± straight, diverging from midrib at a wide angle, fairly well spaced, joined by shallow loops ± parallel to the margin. Tendrils terminal, long, woody, with recurved hooks representing sterile inflorescence branches. Inflorescences terminal and axillary several-many-flowered cymes up to 18 mm. long with slender, glabrous or sparsely pilose axes and conspicuous sepal-like bracts. Flowers white, tinged pink in bud, sweet-scented. Calyx c. 1 mm. long, lobes ovate, dorsally glabrous, ciliate. Corolla tube 2–2·5 mm. long, glabrous externally, sometimes pubescent within; corolla lobes ± equalling tube, narrowly elliptic, glabrous or pubescent on upper surface, with or without marginal cilia. Stamens inserted in upper half of corolla tube, anthers c. 1 mm. long, sometimes reaching mouth of tube. Ovary c. 1 mm. long, conical; style very short; gynoecium c. 1·5 long. Fruit ovoid and green when young, swelling to 4 x 2 cm., becoming orange or red with dark lenticels, with edible pulp. Seeds c. 1 cm. long.
Habitat
In mushitu vegetation.
Range
Widely distributed in tropical Africa from Guiné-Bissau to Zaire and Angola
Distribution
Zambia W Mwinilunga Distr., 6·5 km. N. of Kalene Hill Mission, fl. 25.ix.1952, White 3370 (BR; FHO; K).
Notes
Pichon, op. cit.: 244 (1953), emphasises that in this species the relative lengths of corolla tube and petals are unusually variable; the lobes can be up to six times as long as the tube. In the few flowering specimens seen from the F.Z. area they are approximately equal.
