Stems slender, many from one rhizome, 2–3 ft. long. Leaves ovate or ovate-oblong, 1/2–1 1/2 in. long, 6–8 in. broad, glaucous-green above, pinnately variegated with streaks of white. Panicle erect, with slender spreading hispid branches; bracts oblong-lanceolate, pubescent, 1 1/2–1 3/4 in. long. Flowers small, blue-purple. Sepals lanceolate, obtuse, 1/6 in. long. Petals lorate, obtuse, longer than the staminodia. Lip small, narrow. Style longer than the staminodia. Fruit globose, hispid, 1/4 in. long, shining, scarlet, usually 2-seeded.
