Information
Tree, 15–50 m tall; bole straight, narrow, one-half to two-thirds the height of a tree, slightly flaring to sharply buttressed at the base; bark variable in colour from whitish, grey, dark olive, to greyish-brown, fissured and flaking; crown smallish and rounded to pyramidal young branchlets tan to reddish-brown to black, smooth or striate, pubescent with stellate hairs, becoming glabrous in age. Leaves elliptic to obovate, 7–14.5 cm long, 3.2–6.8 cm wide; apex acuminate and mucronate, margin entire to sinuate toward to apex and slightly revolute, base obtuse/rounded or rarely cuneate; glabrous below; glabrous and glossy with a few scattered stellate hairs along the midvein above; below with domatia in vein axils; petiole 1.3–4.2 cm long, finely stellate-pubescent; stipules triangulate, fugaceous. Inflorescences 2–3-flowered corymbs (sometimes appearing 1-flowered by abscission); peduncle and pedicels densely stellate-pubescent; peduncle 2–3.5 cm long; pedicels 0.8–1.5 cm long, articulated 2–3 mm below the flower. Floral buds ovoid, 7–9 mm long, 5–7 mm wide. Flowers sweet-scented. Calyx lobes lanceolate to ovate, 8–12 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, densely stellate-pubescent outside. Petals broadly obovate, 9–10 mm long, 6–7 mm wide, white or cream-coloured, glabrous. Stamens in 5 fascicles of 3 each, consisting of 1 external and 2 internal stamens, free portion of filaments ± 0.5–1 mm long, anthers 2.5–5 mm long; staminodes 5, 6–7 mm long, coriaceous. Ovary ± 1 mm long, ± 1 mm in diameter; stigma lobes 1–2 mm long, + sessile. Capsule obconic, costulate toward the base, 3.1–3.5 cm long, 2.3–2.6 cm in diameter, densely covered with minute, golden-brown hairs, carpels flaring at the apex, summit prolonged into an erect horn, and apex deeply concave; inner carpel walls with stellate hairs in the seed cavities; seeds ± 7 mm long, 3–4 mm in diameter, seed wings 12–13 mm long, 6–7 mm wide. Notes
CONSERVATION This species appears to be very widespread and often very common, and its main African habitat, semi-deciduous forest, although much diminished in West Africa, is still intact, as far as is known, in the Congo basin. It is rated here as of near threatened for conservation on the basis of reports that the Congo basin is to be made accessible for the export of timber.
