Information
Rhizome 3–5 cm long, ovoid; roots with elongate tubers. Leaves developing after flowering; blade narrowly elliptic, 17–36 x 2–4.5 cm, acuminate at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base; sheaths sulcate, forming a well developed false stem to 70 cm tall. Inflorescences 4–12-flowered, with a very short peduncle, mostly below ground; floral bracts 3–4 x 1 cm, obtuse. Calyx 2.7–3.5(–5) cm long. Corolla-tube 2.5–5.5 cm long, 1–2 mm in diam.; corolla-lobes elliptic, 2.8–5.5 cm long, whitish and translucent. Labellum mauve to purple, 3-lobed, 5–11.5 cm long, the central lobe rounded and ± emarginate, with a yellow mark at the base. Stamen obovate to oblong, up to 5 cm long; anthers 8–9 mm long. Fruit ± subterranean, subglobose, ± 1.5 cm in diam. Seeds ± 6 x 2 mm, pale, shiny.
Range
S3 widespread in tropical Africa from Ethiopia to Senegal in the west and Zimbabwe in the south.
