Information
Plants 15–60(–75) cm. high. Rhizome horizontal, short, moniliform; roots fairly thin, shortly branched, bearing tubers 2–3 cm. long, mainly on the lateral branches. Leaves rosulate, glabrous, lanceolate, broadest at the middle, narrowed and clasping below, occasionally petiolate, 10–75 long, (1–)2–4(–6) cm. wide, with distinct midrib, the margins glabrous or minutely scabrid, often undulate. Peduncle terete, glabrous, leafless, occasionally with a single sterile bract below the inflorescence, 10–50 cm. long. Inflorescence paniculate; branches usually with short internodes (except for the lowermost ones), more elongated in shade-forms; rhachis glabrous to papillate; floral bracts 5–15(–30) mm. long, 1–3 mm. wide, larger and longer in shade forms. Pedicels articulated near or above the middle, 3–10 mm. long, slightly papillate, 2–4-nate at the lower nodes. Perianth with reflexed tepals, greenish, 5–7 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. wide, 3(–5)-veined. Stamens as long as the perianth; filaments fusiform, scabrid, ± 3 mm. long; anthers 2–3 mm. long. Style straight, as long as the stamens. Capsule deeply triquetrous, emarginate, 3–6 mm. long, 4–7 mm. wide, smooth. Seeds disc- to saucer-shaped, ± 2.5 mm. in diameter.

Notes
Shade forms superficially resemble C. comosum by having semiprostrate inflorescences. They can be distinguished by flower colour (greenish in C. gallabatense ) and root system (small tubers on lateral branches in C. gallabatense ). Forest forms with prostrate inflorescences (e.g. Mbago 1074, Kigoma District, Gombe Stream and Bidgood, Sitoni, Vollesen & Whitehouse 4331, Mpanda District, Livendabe Forest) might deserve taxonomic recognition. Flowering material is needed. For further see under C. micranthum and C. floribundum .Chromosome number: 2n=14 based on countings from Kenya, cf. Nordal et al. in Mitt. Inst. Allg. Bot. Hamburg 23 (1990).
