Information
Fruit markedly laterally flattened, marginal rim extended into a ± entire or irregularly crenate to long-spinose wing, 3–4.5 x 2–3(3.5) mm., ellipsoid; apical spine (1)4–9 mm. long, 2 basal spines (0.5)2–6 mm. long; surface usually with few-many small ± elongate, rarely rounded, warty papillae up to 0.2 mm. long, sometimes spinulose and up to 0.3 mm. high.

Notes
This is the typical variety of subsp. muricatum, but by the rule of priority has to take the existing varietal epithet echinatum. Var. manschuricum Miki, found in Europe and the Far East, differs in having few unequal-sized large dark wans or spines on its fruit surface.
