Notes
VARIATION. The characters of variational interest in the species as a whole are the ovary indumentum, the pedicel length, and the shape of the leaves, especially the last two. Collectors should try to assess and preserve the variation of these characters within local populations. Two varieties of this species occur in our area; their diagnostic features are italicized in the descriptions below. As accepted by the present author, C. gummiflua Tul. is a very variable and wide-ranging species, the full treatment of which remains to be worked out. In the present arrangement the type variety is found only in Madagascar, and the fourth variant is var. mannii (Hook. f. ex Oliv.) J. Lewis from West Africa. There is an urgent need for specimens showing stages in the development of the flowers and fruits, especially for the latter.
