Information
Shrub, rarely procumbent, 0.2–3 m high; young branches with short appressed or spreading hairs. Leaves (3–)5–15(–25) cm long, eglandular; stipules subulate, linear or narrowly triangular, 3–5(–9) mm long; leaflets (3–)4–8(–13) pairs, lanceolate to elliptic, 1.5–5(–6) x 0.4–1(–1.5) cm, appressed puberulous or pubescent. Racemes 5–30 cm long; bracts elliptic to obovate, obtuse to shortly acuminate, 5–11 mm long. Sepals greenish or hyaline. Petals yellow or orange-yellow, 0.7–1.7 cm long. Stamens 10: 2 anthers large, 5 medium-sized, 3 small. Pods shortly oblong, slightly curved to almost straight, flattened, (3–)4–7 x 1.6–2.6 cm, dehiscent, transversely septate within. Seeds transversely arranged, compressed, oblong or oblong-ovate, apiculate near hilum, often emarginate at opposite end, 5–7 x 3.5–4 mm, reticulate or rugose, with a small areole on each face.
Notes
Jalelo, jalelo gel (Som.). Leaves and pods used as a purgative, known as senna, produced commercially from var. alexandrina principally in India.
