Information
Thorny, scrambling shrub up to 5 m. tall or a climber; branches rather zigzag, densely ferruginously hairy when young, remaining green for several years. Leaf-lamina 3–6 x 0.8–3 cm., oblong, elliptic, obovate or somewhat rhomboid, obtuse or emarginate at the apex, broadly cuneate or obtuse at the base, pubescent above but soon glabrescent, rather more densely pubescent below but also becoming glabrous with age; petiole up to 6 mm. long, densely pubescent. Flowers in few- to many-flowered axillary fascicles; pedicels up to 1.2 cm. long, ferruginously hairy. Buds globose. Sepals c. 4 x 2.5 mm., the inner pair somewhat narrower, broadly elliptic, obtuse at the apex, densely ferruginously appressed-hairy outside. Petals cream, 5–6 x 1.5–2.5 mm., oblanceolate, obtuse at the apex, sparsely pilose on both sides. Stamens (5) 8 (10) with filaments c. 6 mm. long. Gynophore c. 6 mm. long, sparsely pilose or glabrescent, inserted on a convex receptacle; ovary ovoid, attenuated into a short style c. 1 mm. long; stigma not wider than the style. Fruit orange, up to 1.2 cm. in diam., globose, slightly fleshy, apiculate. Seeds 2–10, 3–4 mm. in diam., globose.
Habitat
Thicket-forming species or climber in riverine fringes or on termite mounds, rather rare in our area but more common in Acacia thornbush to the north in Tanganyika.

Notes
This species is very near C.rothii Oliv. of NE. and W. Africa but the latter has (15) 18 (22) stamens. There appear to be no intermediates, and C. elaeagnoides is evidently a good species.
