Information
Fairly robust perennial with long slender stolons and a 7–10 mm thick bulb; stems 10–60 cm long and 1–3 mm thick, triangular, growing directly from the bulb. Leaves many from the base, the largest 15–30 cm long and 2.5 mm wide; leaf-sheaths rather wide and fleshy, brown. Inflorescence a congested anthela of few–many crowded spikes, 2–4 cm in diam., more rarely with 1–4 additional stalked spikes; inflorescence-bracts 4–8, leafy, spreading or reflexed, the largest 8–20 cm long. Spikelets 5–20 x 1.5–3 mm, lanceolate, golden yellow to yellowish brown, 8–15-flowered. Glumes 3.8–5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, yellowish brown to medium reddish brown with a green excurrent midrib (in the uppermost glumes the mucro is at least 0.5 mm long and recurved) and 3–5 prominent lateral nerves on each side of the midrib. Style 3-branched.

N2, 3; S1, 2 also in East Africa.
Altitude range
near sea-level to 1250 m.
