Information
Coarse annual. Culms 60–120 cm. high. Leaf laminae 5–25 mm. wide. Inflorescence of 3–15 racemes, these 2–8 cm. long, bearing spikelets singly on a ribbon-like rhachis 1–3 mm. wide with minutely ciliolate margins. Spikelets 4–6 mm. long, sparsely pubescent above, acute. Inferior glume 1/3 length of spikelet, acute to acuminate, separated from the superior by a short internode. Superior lemma minutely granulose, with a short stubby mucro.

Notes
B. plantaginea (Link) Hitchc. is a similar west African species, occurring also in South America. It differs in the obtuse inferior glume and emucronate superior lemma.
