Information
Small, evergreen, round-topped tree up to 8 m. tall; bark pale grey, deeply longitudinally and sinuously fluted; young branches pubescent, with raised ridges decurrent from below the petioles. Leaves alternate and single on the branches or often 2–4 together in fascicles on very abbreviated lateral branches; lamina 2–7 x 0.7–2 cm., coriaceous, somewhat glaucous, elliptic to oblanceolate, apex rounded or acute with a pungent apiculus, cuneate at the base, veins finely but strongly reticulate below, minutely puberulous and eventually glabrescent above, densely puberulous below; petiole up to 4 mm. long, pubescent. Inflorescence of terminal, crowded, compound corymbs c. 4 cm. in diam., often borne on short lateral branches; peduncles and pedicels densely pubescent; pedicels 2–8 mm. long; bracteoles 1–2 mm. long, filiform, trifid. Sepals 2–3 mm. long, lanceolate, subobtuse at the apex, pubescent on both sides and ciliate on the margins; receptacle disk-like, of 10–15 fimbriately divided segments. Stamens 8–10 with glabrous filaments c. 3 mm. long. Gynophore 1.5 mm. long, glabrous; ovary ovoid; ovules c. 8 on 2 placentas; stigma subsessile, capitate. Fruit yellowish, 1–1.3 cm. in diam., globose, slightly pitted or granular. Seeds 1–2, up to 8 mm. in diam., subglobose, slightly rugose, embedded in a sticky pulp.
Habitat
In drier types of woodland i.e. Acacia, Colophospermum mopane or Adansonia etc. woodlands; if occurring in Brachystegia woodlands then confined to termite mounds.
