Information
Tree to 35 m. tall, with smooth greenish-yellow bark. Leaves collected towards the ends of the branches, (3) 5 (7)-foliolate; petiole up to 7 cm. long; leaflet-lamina oblong-elliptic, apex bluntly acuminate or occasionally mucronate, base cuneate, with c. 12 pairs of slightly raised nerves looping within the margin; petiolule up to 1 cm. long. Flowers single or in fascicles of up to 5 in the leaf-axils; pedicel rather stout, up to 2·5 cm. long. Calyx c. 1 × 0·8 cm., campanulate, ± truncate, glabrous or stellate-puberulous. Petals apricot or pale yellow, up to 9 (11) cm. long, straight in full flower, narrowly lanceolate-linear, apex blunt or sub-acute, tomentellous on both sides. Staminal tube up to 1·5 cm. long; filaments red, 5–6 cm. long, attached just above the anther-base; anthers c. 1·5 mm. long. Ovary ovoid, tomentellous; style c. 9 cm. long, glabrous; stigma ellipsoid, entire. Fruit c. 6 × 3 cm., ellipsoid to obovoid; valves glabrous or minutely tomentellous outside; wool very copious, reddish-brown. Seeds numerous, c. 1 cm. in diam., irregularly globose; testa smooth, brown.
Habitat
Dry woodland, often with Acacia spp. In Tanganyika it is also recorded in evergreen forest.
