Information
Perennial herb or subshrub 1–2(–3) m high, erect, with several stems from a thickened rootstock; stems sparsely hispid. Leaves ovate in outline, pinnatipartite to rarely bipinnatisect, up to 14 cm long, up to 9 cm wide, the primary segments ovate to narrowly lanceolate, margins serrate, hispid all over, rarely glabrous but for the margin. Capitula in few-headed lax terminal cymes; stalks of individual capitula to 12 cm long; involucre 5–11 mm long; outer phyllaries 9–13, green, pubescent, inner phyllaries 9–15, light brown, puberulous; paleae 5–8 mm long. Ray florets yellow, pistillate and fertile, 11–13, tube 1–2.4 mm long, rays 13–27 mm long; disc florets 3.8–5.5 mm long. Achenes black or grey, 3.4–6 mm long, strigose; aristae 2, 0.3–2.1 mm long, antrorsely barbed, sometimes falling early.
