Information
Evergreen tree up to 22 m. tall; bark on bole dark brown, rough, on branches smooth. Leaves up to 20 cm. long, imparipinnate; rhachis not winged; leaflets (2)3–4-jugate, opposite, distinctly petiolulate, up to 8 × 3·4 cm., ovate or lanceolate to obovate or oblanceolate, apex acuminate, margin entire, base cuneate, glabrous beneath, with venation prominent on both surfaces. Racemes up to 18 cm. long, slender. Flowers purplish-pink, with pedicels c. 6 mm. long. Calyx c. 5 mm. long, tomentellous. Petals c. 9 mm. long, tomentellous. Disk ^-shaped. Capsule c. 1·5 × 1·75 cm., tomentose at first, glabrescent in patches, rugose. Seeds bright red with a yellow cushion-shaped aril, c. 8 × 5 mm.

In patches of evergreen forest, especially at edges and in kloof forest and riverine forest
