Notes
This variety is at first sight very distinctive with its short spines and a conspicuously dense indumentum. However, some material of other varieties of B. aegyptiaca is equally hairy, and short spines also occur, including those on intermediate specimens from adjacent areas such as Tabora District, and on some specimens of var. quarrei. Collections from Tabora (T4, Lindeman 8 & 603) are short-spined, but are here excluded from var. tomentosa and referred to B. aegyptiaca var. aegyptiaca. They have larger, more glabrescent leaflets and longer petioles and there appears to be a link with var. quarrei and a ‘southern form’ of B. aegyptiaca, occurring south of the Tanzanian border. Var. ferox and var pallida occur respectively in W Africa and around the Gulf of Aden.
