Information
Shrub or small tree up to 8 m high, spiny, with often spreading or pendulous branches; young stems densely tomentellous, glabrescent. Spines arising 0.5–1.2(–2.6) cm above leaf-axil, (4.6–)6.4–12.5(–14.5) cm long, frequently branched and with small secondary spines. Scale leaves up to 1.25 mm long. Foliage leaves on stems and spines, puberulous to tomentellous, ± glabrescent; petiole (1–)1.5–6(–8) mm long; petiolule (0–)1–2(–3.5) mm long; leaflets broadly obovate to spathulate, 0.3–4 x 1.1–3 cm, thinly leathery to subsucculent, cuneate at the base, rounded or obtuse to emarginate at the apex. Flowers 5-merous, apiculate in bud, solitary or in 2–4(–8)-flowered sometimes pedunculate clusters on spines or axillary; pedicels 0.5–2 cm long, grey-pubescent or tomentellous. Sepals 3.5–6 mm long, tomentellous. Petals elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, green or greenish-yellow, 6–9 mm long. Stamens 10. Ovary densely villous; style 1–4 mm long. Fruit elongating only very slightly in early development, then becoming ovoid to subglobose, ripening yellow or orange, 1.2–3.1 x 1.3–2.2 cm.
