Stems ± erect, woody-based, up to 1 m high including inflorescence, almost glabrous or vegetative parts puberulous throughout. Leaves often clustered on axillary shoots, oblong-lanceolate, 1–5 x 0.4–1 cm, cuneate at the base, subacute to rounded at the apex. Flowers in large very diffuse terminal cymes, usually solitary, sessile, subtended by minute bracts and held on a c. 6–20 mm long very slender peduncle appearing as a pedicel. Perianth-limb white or pale pink, c. 2 mm long. Stamens usually 3. Anthocarp fusiform to subclavate, 5-ribbed, c. 3–4 mm long, glabrous or puberulous in grooves.
Ula-ass (Som.). In the literature B. elegans is said to have long slender pedicels, but actually the flowers are sessile, usually solitary, and held on long slender peduncles.
