stem erect, herbaceous, sulcate, 2 1/2 ft. high, much branched; leaves alternate, linear-lanceolate or linear, 1–3 in. long, 1 1/2–3 lin. wide, entire or slightly sinuate, rather thick; lateral nerves obsolete; petiole short; flower clusters distant on slender spikes paniculately arranged; bracteoles in fruit rhomboid-ovate, coarsely dentate on the margins and back, free nearly to the base, texture spongy, 2–7 lin. long; styles linear, thrice as long as the ovary. null
