Notes
It is possible that A. engleriana should be referred to some other variety but the brief description suggests that this is the correct place. There are numerous intermediates and forms. A form from Tabora (F. G. Smith 886, Wallace 1223) with large round leaves and very prominent venation is distinctive and B. D. Burtt 2102 (from Mbulu District) with prostrate stems and tiny leaves is even more so. South African material is often semi-prostrate. A. malvacea var. parviflora Rendle in F.T.A. 4 (2) : 122 (1905) (Type : Tanganyika, N. of Lake Nyasa, Thomson (K, holo. !)) is an intermediate with var. volkensii, with small leaves 1.5 × 1.2 cm. and flowering when only 8 cm. tall.
