Information
Densely caespitose perennial 60–90 cm. high, the culms woolly tomentose for some distance below the nodes. Leaf-blades flat, curly, up to 20 cm. long and 3 mm. wide; sheaths glabrous to villous. Panicle 5–15 cm. long, narrow, ± interrupted, the spikelets clustered about the short primary branches. Spikelets enclosed by narrowly lanceolate subequal glumes, the lower sometimes a little longer than the upper; lower glume 4–8 mm. long, scaberulous, with or without an awn-point up to 2.5 mm. long; upper glume 5–8 mm. long, glabrous, minutely 2-toothed, with or without a mucro up to 1 mm. long; lemma terete, 5–6.5 mm. long, scaberulous; callus oblong, 0.3 mm. long, truncate, bearded along the sides; awn with a slightly twisted column (0.5–)1.5–2.5(–5.5) mm. long, not articulated, the central limb 8–17 mm. long, the laterals 7–13 mm. long.

Notes
A. leucophaea is distinguished by its woolly culms, but the other characters tend to intergrade with 5, A. junciformis. East African specimens have the column of the awn unusually long (3.5–5.5 mm.) but otherwise closely resemble the rest of the species.
